Housing, Groceries & Food:

2. How would you describe the availability and cost of groceries and household supplies relative to your home country?

You can get anything you want, but you have to search for some specific things like cheeses, canned tomato products, or artisanal beer. Overall it's very easy to adjust one's cooking to the scope of available products. Produce is surprisingly expensive, but abundant and high quality.

4. What typical restaurants, food delivery services, and/or takeout options are popular among expatriates?

Sonora is the carne asada capital. You can get insane beef tacos and steak; we had a CG who had served in Argentina previously, and he said that the steaks in HMO were better than the steaks in BA!!

There is a brewery called Buqui Bicchi that is popular, although it's not known for its food. Reliable burgers and fries. Wings are very popular in Hermosillo. I believe there is one italian restaurant in town, and it's just ok.

Daily Life:

1. How do you send and receive your letters and package mail? Are local postal facilities adequate?

Local postal facilities are not reliable, and most locals use DHL. The Diplomatic Post Office (DPO) at Post is reliable.

2. What is the availability and cost of household help, and what types of help are typically employed by expatriates?

I had a housekeeper who came once every two weeks. She cleaned my house so beautifully, and I paid her $60 for each visit. I think that is about twice the market rate. I had a great experience with her and I treasured the peace she brought to my life. A lot of people told me not to pay her that much because she would grow to expect a higher-than-usual salary. I didn't even care. She made my life so great.

3. Do you feel that it is safe to walk, run or hike outside? Are there areas where bike riding is possible? What is the availability and safety of outdoor space for exercising? Are these easily accessible?

Yes to all of the above, technically. You can walk. Sidewalks are unreliable and bumpy. Hermosillo is a city for drivers. outdoor space for exercising is not extensive, but there are hiking trails in the city. Overall I would not recommend spending too much time outdoors unless you are going to the beach due to the heat.

4. What kinds of gyms or other sports/workout facilities are available? Are they expensive?

There are a few gyms that people use, like FitMax, which is the most popular gym in town. I have heard it is crowded. There's a CrossFit. I went to JCV, a gym in a mall, which was awesome. there is a small gym for women called ViveFit that provides daily classes that target specific areas of your body. Gym culture is very strong in Hermosillo, and you can find anything at any price point.

2. What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?

I had a Subaru Impreza that was low to the ground. The speed bumps will get ya, but overall, any car is acceptable! An amazing benefit of living in Hermosillo is that car care is high quality, ample, and affordable. I had to get my car towed once due to a dead battery, and it cost me $30 USD. $30 to tow my car!!

Employment & Volunteer Opportunities:

1. What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?

It gets to be over 100 degrees for much of the year, so whatever is comfortable is fine! Sonora is a more traditional state than other parts of Mexico, so you'll see men wearing cowboy boots to the grocery store. It's a little more conservative than other medium cities, but there's nothing that's expressly off-limits. Women tend to dress up beautifully and wear a full face of makeup every day. One time I went to a fifth birthday party and all of the little girls looked more put-together than I had ever looked.

That said, there is no pressure for expats to match the fashion of Mexican ladies! At work, business casual is the norm. Men will wear Guayaberas to work, even on days when they have meetings. Suits and ties just aren't practical sometimes.

Health & Safety:

1. Are there personal security concerns to be aware of at this post? Please describe.

I feel like everyone in Mexico says that there is a big narco presence in Hermosillo. There will be a lot of incidents in the news and in the grapevine. For example, one young man from my gym was shot in a drive-by shooting because he allegedly had pursued a narco's girlfriend, and somehow everyone at the gym knew which narco, who the woman was, and that this young man had it coming. It's such a wild thing to hear, but if you generally don't mess around with these guys, mind your own business, Hermosillo is just as safe as any city.

2. Are there any particular health concerns? What is the quality of available medical care? What medical conditions typically require medical evacuation?

Anything you want to do in the U.S., consider doing in HMO first. The medical care there is great. During my time at post, women opted to have their babies at local hospitals because it was safe and affordable. I got LASIK and botox in Hermosillo. It was awesome.

5. Are there any particular mental health issues that tend to crop up at post, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter blues)?

Sometimes, in September, when you're waiting for the heat to break, life can look pretty bleak. The cure for that is a trip to San Carlos!

5. Is this a good city for LGBT expatriates? Why or why not?

Hermosillo is not going to host the world's biggest pride parade any time soon, but there is *a* pride parade!! There is also a growing LGBTQ scene! There are monthly dance parties and events, but you have to find them on Instagram and just go to the event even if you're alone or scared. LGBTQ people can find community and joy in Hermosillo, it just takes a little effort.

Words of Wisdom:

1. What do you wish you had known about this particular city/country before moving there?

I wish I hadn't judged it so harshly when I arrived. The architecture, for the most part, is not beautiful. I went to Mexico City for a trip and I got a little jealous. I wish I hadn't wasted my time like that! Sonora is unlike anywhere else in Mexico.
