What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?
It gets to be over 100 degrees for much of the year, so whatever is comfortable is fine! Sonora is a more traditional state than other parts of Mexico, so you'll see men wearing cowboy boots to the grocery store. It's a little more conservative than other medium cities, but there's nothing that's expressly off-limits. Women tend to dress up beautifully and wear a full face of makeup every day. One time I went to a fifth birthday party and all of the little girls looked more put-together than I had ever looked. That said, there is no pressure for expats to match the fashion of Mexican ladies! At work, business casual is the norm. Men will wear Guayaberas to work, even on days when they have meetings.
