Bucharest - Post Report Question and Answers

Would someone with physical disabilities have difficulties living in this city?

Somewhat accessible. Some sidewalks in the cities but may be blocked with parked cars. A majority of tall buildings have elevators but lots of stairs and curbs when walking around. Most stores don't have ramps. - Jun 2023

I would say it's about as bad/good as any major city in the U.S. There are accessible parking spaces in large parking lots. There are sidewalks, although sometimes they're blocked by cars. The subway stations have elevators. Many shops don't have wheelchair ramps. - Mar 2019

Yes, I don’t think many accommodations have been made in a Bucharest. - Jun 2018

Though accommodations aren't up to par and getting around can be tricky, transportation is getting better. The metro is installing more handicapped elevators and escalators but it's a slow process. Sidewalks are slowly improving too, but of course the progress doesn't feel fast enough. Some buildings are equipped with ramps, but most are not. I found I frequently had to pick up my stroller and carry it into stores or buildings. - Feb 2014

Very difficult. - Jan 2013

Very hard to impossible. No sidewalks, narrow streets etc. - Aug 2012

A lot, especially if walking and stairs are a problem. - May 2011

Terrible for someone with physical disabilities. Many buildings lack elevators. Sidewalk curbs and public transport are not wheelchair accessible. Most of the population, especially drivers, are impatient with those with disabilities. Best to avoid this place. - Jul 2010

IF there are sidewalks, they are full of holes, water, dangerous things coming up from the concrete, etc. There are many steps and the construction is very cheap. - Dec 2009

A lot. If you have physical disabilities this wouldn't be a good place to come. Sidewalks will be hard to handle, crossing the street dangerous, and there's little steps and few elevators. - Dec 2008

Bucharest would be tough. There is no parking available in the city so everyone parks on the sidewalk. As a result there is no access. - Feb 2008

Don't even try it. Disabilities don't get any consideration in buildings or new designs. - Jan 2008

It's hard enough to walk in the city as it is. - Jan 2008
