Freetown - Post Report Question and Answers

Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?

Embassy staff are not permitted to take public transit so we rely on motor pool. There are private drivers and vehicles available that may be safe to use. For non-embassy personnel who choose to take kek-keks and taxis, be careful. A lot of people have been robbed, and it's very unsafe. - May 2025

Not really. Some expats use ocados (motorcycles) or kks, but neither are very safe. - Jan 2022

We are unable to use any public transportation here at post. - Sep 2021

Taxis, tuk tuks and motorbikes are very affordable yes, but we aren't allowed to use them. You'll get ripped off as a gringo anyway. - May 2018

No, no, and no. Bring a car/buy a car. - Sep 2017

Local travel is affordable. Taxis within Freetown don't drive fast enough to be really dangerous, traveling upcountry in a local podapoda is more risky. You should not travel outside Freetown at night, there are no street lights and people drive too fast with old cars. - Sep 2014

No and yes. - Jun 2014

While local transport is cheap, it's dangerous. - Aug 2013

NOT allowed. - Sep 2010
