New Delhi - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any unusual problems with insects or other infestations in housing?

No, but it’s a big city and warm climate, so yes, there are bugs about. - Apr 2024

We didn't have any problems with this, but we were on the third floor. Ground level apartments were probably a lot more problematic. Mosquitos are a problem everywhere, but since we never opened our doors or windows, they never really got into the house. - Jan 2022

Yes, it is a constant battle. Mosquitos carry dengue, which is a real problem in Delhi even among the expats and diplomats, as well as malaria to a lesser degree and chikengunya (sp?), etc. Ants, cockroaches, etc, are also prevalent. We had our home sprayed a few times during our 3 years to keep them at bay. - Sep 2020

Nope. Just need to be aware of ants from time to time. And I found the largest cockroach ever in my toilet once! - Jul 2020

Dengue and malaria carrying mosquitoes are the biggest problem. Standing water is the main culprit. Each year at least half a dozen members of the Embassy or school community come down with Dengue. Some are flown to Singapore for treatment. - Sep 2014

Mosquitos are abundant near dawn and dusk but stay away with bug spray at those times. Dengue is a danger, so be vigilant about bug spray during those times. - Sep 2014

Mosquitoes. And they have dengue fever and malaria. We do not take anti malarial medicine here and that's not a great threat, but dengue is always around. - Aug 2013

Dengue abounds, especially in Fall. Microbes cause serious GI issues for most people. Delhi's dirty secret: it is one of the sickest embassies in the world because of persistent lung and GI issues. Flies and other insects congregate near neighborhood garbage dumps. - May 2013
