Are credit cards widely accepted and safe to use locally? Are ATMs common and do you recommend using them? Are they safe to use?
ATMs for the four major banks (China, Construction, Merchants, and ICBC) accept foreign debit cards, but almost all transactions in the country are made via cell phone through WeChat or Ali Pay. You need a local bank account to use this service. Credit cards are accepted at nice hotels and some business catering to foreigners, but I rarely use one here. - Jun 2019
Great. Chinese ATM card is good for cash out ATMs and paying at BIG supermarkets. Don't try foreign credit cards, you might be disappointed. All it takes to get a local ATM card at a bank is a passport and a big smile. - Jun 2007
