Budapest - Post Report Question and Answers

Are credit cards widely accepted and safe to use locally? Are ATMs common and do you recommend using them? Are they safe to use?

Yes, credit cards are widely accepted. In fact, some festivals (Budapest has more festivals annually than there are weeks in the year) take only credit cards. ATMs are widely available and safe to use. There is one inside the embassy that I would use frequently simply because it was convenient. Occasionally I used one at a bank on the street. - Feb 2020

For the most part, quite safe and accepted. The embassy has an ATM or you can use the cashier's service. - Nov 2018

No problems. Many ATMs. - Dec 2017

No troubles. - Jan 2012

Works the same as in the US, no problems. - Apr 2010

We kept our bank account in the States and had no problems. ATMs are very available. - Dec 2009

Despite world-class technology and ATMS all over the place, many restaurants and smaller stores strongly prefer cash. Some shady-seeming places probably wouldn't be the best place to risk sharing your credit card data. - Feb 2008
