Athens - Post Report Question and Answers

How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?

I didn't need any Greek to get around, though it was nice to have a few phrases. The US Embassy offers free language classes which were great. - Oct 2023

You can get by with little to no Greek in most large cities and islands. It’s only when you get to some of the smaller more remote villages or islands that it becomes more difficult. There will be times you may have to struggle through (the Laiki or small Resturants) but eventually you get what you need. Also, if you try to speak Greek, expect to be corrected a lot (most of the time it’s kind). - Jan 2023

English has been mandatory in the Greek school system since the 70s, you just need the greetings and a smile. - Mar 2022

Most Greeks speak English, but it’s always nice to know some basics (please, thank you, etc). Language was available at the Embassy or on the economy. - Jan 2020

We speak little Greek and have gotten along just fine. Greek classes are offered at the embassy, as well on the local economy for people wanting more exposure. - Mar 2018

You need to know Greek. - Feb 2018

The younger generation speaks good English, but you might have a hard time generally if you don't speak Greek. - Oct 2017

You can get by with English, though you'll occasionally run into a taxi driver or shopkeeper who does not speak English. Greek language instruction is available. - Jan 2017

Most Athenians speak English. Road signage, especially on highways, is in Greek and English so navigating around is not an issue. The metro signage is also in Greek and English. Greek language schools are available. For example, www.lexi-logos.gr/en/ and The Athens Center (http://athenscentre.gr). - Dec 2016

You need to know the alphabet at least. Most people spoke at least some English, but the street signs are only in Greek. The smaller villages you will need to use Greek more than inside Athens. I learned only about 20 words and only had trouble communicating a couple times. - Sep 2013

Greek is a VERY difficult language to learn but any little bit would help. All Greeks between the ages of 10-45 speak English and/or French. - Jul 2012

None. But if you try, the Greeks are friendlier. - Jun 2010

It would be really helpful. Wish I knew more. There are quite a few english speakers here, but knowing how to read this language would be nice. - Jan 2009

You can't drive here without being able to at least read the Greek alphabet. - Dec 2008

I used Earworms and found that helpful. Start with the alphabet-- that helps make eeeeverything easier. I use about 100 words and get by. - Jun 2008
