Religion is regulated and worship is restricted with minimal options; there is occasional casual racism for non-Asians and people of color but over all the people of Guangdong are very kind and open. I have children with blond haired and blue eyes, they are seen as exotic and I specifically had to learn how to say “Do not pet my children” as Aunties will just walk up to your family and take pictures of your kids while trying to touch them. This reads worse than the experience actually is but if you can communicate to them that you don’t like it they immediately stop as it is very normal in local culture to be that expressive with young children. - Mar 2026
Morale is good and most people really like it here. It is accessible. It helps if you already have a knack for living in China. - Nov 2018
China's a place that really gets under your skin, or it was for me. While I thought when I left that I would never serve there again, the longer I'm away, the more I find myself considering it. It's not an easy place to serve, for a host of reasons, but it can be hugely rewarding in a lot of ways. - Aug 2014
Like everywhere else, this post is what you make of it. It has a lot to offer for someone who wants to get out there and take it. - May 2013
Bid it, you won't regret it! - Jan 2013
If you have young white children (especially babies), come with a lot of patience. The Chinese will think your kid is just the cutest thing they've ever seen, always wanting to take pictures with him/her, touching him/her, and commenting about him/her. It's nice at first, but that wears off quickly. - May 2011
