What do people who suffer from environmental or food allergies need to know?

Environmental allergies, especially dust and pollen, can be pretty rough. It's good to come with a plan and be prepared. Food allergies can be accommodated, though not as easily as in the States. At home is not really a problem, but traveling with food allergies can be tricky. - Mar 2024


Nairobi is basically in perpetual spring so yes, people with seasonal allergies can have a bit of a rough time. For food allergies, you have to be very specific and emphatic when ordering at a restaurant to avoid allergens. - Aug 2023

A lot of people have issues with the milk. Be careful about what milk you buy as it can be diluted with all sorts of things. You won't find much in the way of lactose-free or gluten-free. There are some health food shops, but the selection of items is small. Environment...it's a dusty country. Keep that in mind. Other than that, you'll have to see how you react to the flora. - Aug 2021


There are so many living things here, like crazy plants I've never seen before. Wild animals are everywhere. So if you've got allergies, come prepared. As for the food, most reputable places will work with you to adjust their dishes to suit your allergies. But don't assume that will be the case if you're digging deep into the local cuisine. - Dec 2018


The air quality issues above.

Food allergen contact would be pretty easily avoided. Schools are cautious about nuts and dairy, etc. As far as that goes, I would say that the schools here are even more cautious than in the west, out of concern for religious dietary restrictions as well as allergies.
