What do you wish you had known about this particular city/country before moving there?
Post provides larger housing, but very limited furniture. It's not enough to fill the house. It's expensive to think about the space and the furniture you need. Don't think that you can supply things on your own, like a desk or computer or dehumidifier locally. Before packing your HHE, go search up tariffs on Guyana goods. Think about things that can be shipped via DPO by size and weight and consider purchasing items before you packout your HHE. GET A CAR FOR YOUR SPOUSE! The most unhappy people at this post are the ones that do not have a means to get out of their house at all. If you can't afford a car for the adults at post, please consider another option. This isn't a post where you can walk to the store. - Aug 2026
That despite what people may say or how brave you are, it is not walkable for white women or pets. That the food scene is lacking significantly. I really expected more of an Indian influence/culture. - Apr 2024

The school is not a good option. This reality was glossed over until we got here and realized how bad it was for us. We knew it needed improvement, and the facilities weren't great. We also knew there weren't a bunch of after school activities, but we didn't realize teacher morale was so incredibly low that teachers would be constantly quitting. In my opinion, quality of instruction is low and quality of leadership is lower, and I can't foresee that changing anytime soon. - Aug 2021

This is by far the smallest, most “off the beaten track” city we’ve ever lived in. The fishbowl phenomenon is quite real here, and it’s compounded by the cost and difficulty in escaping Georgetown (much less Guyana). We didn’t know how hard that combination can be until we experienced it ourselves. - Aug 2019
