What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?
Remote employee work is completely possible here. The local form of IRS is struggling with corruption, but has a generic Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy around EFM work tax work. Internet is quite strong and I've had trouble only one day in a full year. Working remote for a US company or US Govt organization is definitely an option here. There are a multitude of EFM work options at the embassy right now and a shortage of people to fill them. While this could change, there are so many I struggle to see it. There are incentives such as part time work being offered as well. The local school also has teacher openings and I'm told that the pay is pretty decent but do not have specifics. Teachers could certainly get work. One of the Exxon spouses that I know also works in the medical profession and has gotten work here. There's a strong medical school in the area, but again do not know specifics. - Aug 2026
Most spouses do not work here. Local jobs and salaries are not competitive by any stretch of the imagination. - Apr 2024
Most expatriate spouses work at the international school or the Embassy. I haven't heard of anyone working on the local economy. - Jun 2022
Teleworking is possible for an external organization outside of Guyana. I also know many spouses that work in the diplomatic mission. - Sep 2020
Most EFM spouses work at the Embassy. Outside of hiring freeze(s) and government shutdown(s), Embassy management does its best to open as many EFM jobs as possible. Quite simply, this is a small Embassy in a difficult post, and there’s always a need for qualified extra help. A few spouses also telecommute. Telecom infrastructure is reasonably good, as noted above, and there’s no real time difference to contend with, so established telecommuters can probably make something work here. - Aug 2019
Most work in the embassy. There have been openings at the international school while we've been here. Some spouses have taught exercise classes, like zumba, or been personal trainers. There is a lot of opportunity to volunteer. - Sep 2016
