Georgetown - Post Report Question and Answers
What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?
Several people anticipate purchasing a car at post only to find limits when they arrive. I would encourage exploring your car plans early. There are large tarriffs on most vehicles, so shipping a car in can be smart if you are part of a diplomatic situation, or investigate purchasing someone's vehicle who is leaving. Shipping of our car took four months so planning ahead is crucial. While only one car is allowed to be shipped and sent in tax-free, a secondary car can be purchased by an exiting diplomat for a spouse. This allows one to skip paying the expensive taxes that Guyana charges on vehicles. - Aug 2026
