How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?

Local language classes are affordable and also in abundance, in Prague you can get by with mostly English. Outside of Prague: depends on location, so some basic Czech may be helpful. Sometimes in the regions bordering Germany and Austria, service industry employees will speak more German than English. - Jan 2026

Quite a bit. While central Prague is littered with English speakers, just getting one block off the beaten path will lead to non-English speakers. Czech is a tough language, but learning key words, smiling, and using hand signals can save lots of grief. - Aug 2011
