Prague - Post Report Question and Answers
How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?
Local language classes are affordable and also in abundance, in Prague you can get by with mostly English. Outside of Prague: depends on location, so some basic Czech may be helpful. Sometimes in the regions bordering Germany and Austria, service industry employees will speak more German than English. - Jan 2026
For daily living in Prague, not much of the local language is needed, but it is nice to know some basic phrases and pleasantries. When traveling outside of the city, it could come in handy. - Dec 2015
Quite a bit. While central Prague is littered with English speakers, just getting one block off the beaten path will lead to non-English speakers. Czech is a tough language, but learning key words, smiling, and using hand signals can save lots of grief. - Aug 2011
Many Czechs, especially in downtown Prague, speak English, but Czechs will be friendlier if you try and speak Czech. - Jan 2008
