Valparaiso - Post Report Question and Answers

How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?

Effectively, Chileans do not speak foreign languages. Having said that, though, they are also naturally shy. It is often the case that in a group setting, at least one person will know some 50 odd words of English. If you are really in deep, ask if anyone speaks English. Also, Chilean Spanish is very different than other regions. Allow one week or more for adjustment to their (lack of) pronunciation. - Jul 2006
