Cartagena - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of car do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car do you advise not to bring?

Almost everything is ok. I've seen all kinds of cars including Porsches, Camaros, Jeep, etc. With that said, I wouldn't bring anything nice since you'll most likely have several scratches and dents. Also, the salt air and water will eat your internals from the ground up. - Feb 2020

You need a vehicle you won't mind getting some damage. It floods during rainy season so a high SUV is ideal. Also, aim for something that doesn't require special parts (like exotic cars). Kias, Mazdas, Toyotas are all common here. - Aug 2019

This is a tough one. Generally, resale value in Colombia is pretty high, so some people bring a car for that reason. BUT... don't bring a car you love to Cartagena. The humidity and saltwater will eat it up! We chose not to bring a car and are glad. If you have kids, though, you probably need one. - Mar 2012
