Wellington - Post Report Question and Answers

Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?

Yes, very. - Jan 2021

Safe and affordable. - Jun 2019

All are safe and generally affordable. A monthly Tranzmetro rail pass will cost between $100-$150 NZD, and most people in the suburbs will take this route. You'll see a lot of free range parenting here, with kids as young as 8 or 9 allowed to take the train or ride a taxi to school by themselves. It's almost impossible to go completely carless, though, as there's no kind of alternative options like SmartCar. You'll need a vehicle to get out of town during your tour, or else you'll go stir crazy by staying in Wellington. - Mar 2016

Yes to all; taxis were fairly expensive, but I can't speak for the cost of trains or buses. - Apr 2015
