What is your housing like? What are typical housing sizes, locations, and commute times for expatriates?
Housing is 90% stand-alone houses with lots and lots of green space. Some even have large fenced in/walled in yards. The other housing is six townhomes that are also really nice. 90% of housing is on two gated compounds that are within a 10-minute walk to the Embassy. All housing have screened in porches and open air balconies that can fit large entertainment tables. All housing but the townhomes have covered parking and driveways. The main compound has a paved road where kids can easily ride bikes around and a large pool; other compound is gravel but has a swing set and a large gazebo for parties. Townhouses have the BEST view of the amazing sunsets Belize offers. All housing has three or more bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Lots of light in most housing. The townhomes don't have a lot of storage (a little bit in a closet outside and a decent attic) but the houses have a ton of storage in and outside. Townhouses are 2 stories, houses are 1 and 2-story. A few lucky yards are huge and even fenced. - Aug 2026
Diplomatic housing consists mostly of two housing compounds within a half mile of the US Embassy. The government owned housing is all single family houses, either large two bedroom houses or four bedroom houses. The leased housing consists of three or four bedroom single family homes as well as a handful of townhomes. There are a couple of standalone houses in the vicinity as well. - Jun 2026
There are two housing compounds utilized. The older housing compound has a fantastic swimming pool, tennis court, playground, running track and large area for dogs to run. The houses and gardens are well maintained. The newer housing compound is fewer than 2 years old. All houses are spacious with at least 3 bedrooms, screened in patios, carports. - Feb 2019
The housing compound is absolutely beautiful. The houses are spacious and nicely designed - some say this is the best housing in the Foreign Service. Most people are on the compound, which can sometimes feel small but is great for young kids. - Jun 2015

Belmopan is a new capital city, and there is limited western-quality housing. There is barely a rush hour, and many folks can walk to work. In fact, you can walk to most places in Belmopan from most residential neighborhoods. - Jan 2011
