If you are going to go to China, Chengdu is probably still one of the most "real China" places you can live while still maintaining a fairly comfortable, normal life. It certainly doesn't have the amenities of Beijing or Shanghai or Guangzhou but the people are really lovely and the place is interesting. If you don't mind the pollution and food safety issues (and yes, this is a big IF) Chengdu can be a nice, quiet, but still relevant place to spend a few years. - Aug 2013
