Chengdu - Post Report Question and Answers

Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?

Affordable? Yes. Safe? Depends. We mostly used taxis and Uber. We needed to use Chinese to communicate with the drivers. - Aug 2017

Local taxis and buses are relatively safe. The metro is good, but not very extensive yet. Uber is here, and it is quite cheap. - May 2016

Taxis are affordable compared to other big cities but lack seat belts and generally reek of smoke---not that that ever stopped us from taking them. The metro system opened with one North-South line while we lived there. For getting to some of the tourist sites, it was a useful option but the addition of more lines to the system over the next few years will make it far more useable. Buses and trains are plentiful though often crowded and you'll need some confident Chinese to navigate them at first. - Aug 2013

Trains and taxis, yes. Buses, less so. All are affordable. - May 2013
