Ottawa - Post Report Question and Answers

Is this a good city for LGBT expatriates? Why or why not?

Yes. You see the flag and groups everywhere from the schools to businesses to the government. - Sep 2023

Yes. - Aug 2015

Yes. - May 2014

It seems accepting and boring. - Jul 2013

Yes. Canada is pretty accepting in general and I believe that Canada allows gay marriage and for gay Canadians to petition for visas for their spouses/partners. - Jan 2013

I would think so. - Dec 2010

I've not heard much about this from gay colleagues. It is a small city, so it's probably like being a gay person in Akron, OH or St. Paul, MN. - Aug 2010

Again, it depends. In the more urban neighbourhoods, it is widely accepted and gay/lesbian people can and do integrate quite freely and openly with the non-gay/lesbian types in the city. Going out to the 'burbs or areas with concentrations of certain ethnicities typically results in a much frostier reception. But overall, I would think it is better than most places in North America. - Nov 2009
