Dakar - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

Yes, you have options here of great vets and facilities. There are vets that will come to your home and places you can go where they will be well-equipped to treat your pet. - Apr 2022

I did not have a pet at post, but my friends and colleagues seemed happy with the local veterinarians. - Jul 2020

Don’t have any pets, but know several that do, so it doesn’t seem to be too much of an issue. - Dec 2019

Yes on vets. - Dec 2018

There are a few dependable vets, though it can be a challenge. There is no quarantine. For dog owners, the biggest challenge is the lack of green space. If you have a big dog, make point of requesting a house or apartment with a garden. - Jun 2017

No quarantine, but valid rabies vaccine. Good vet care. No kennels, but most people can find a friend to take care of their pet while on trips. - Apr 2016

No quarantine. There's a vet who makes house calls. - Aug 2015

Nope! There are many pets at post. The roads are not great for walking, as there are many stray dogs that would come up. The Embassy owns a large softball field and play area called Ebbettâs Field which is a wonderful space for pets to run and play. There are weekly play dates for dogs. There are also a number of great vets (French trained, a few speak English) that will also make house calls. There are no kennels, so we would have friends or our housekeeper stay at the house when we traveled. We were very happy to have our dogs with us. - Aug 2014
