Algiers - Post Report Question and Answers

Is it easy to make friends with locals here? Are there any prejudices or any ethnic groups who might feel uncomfortable here?

It is hard to make friends with locals as they tend to stick together. - Dec 2021

Very easy to make friends with Algerians. They are genuinely interested in becoming friends with foreigners, especially Americans and want to practice their English with you. Walk around with a dog and you'll find even more friends and people to chat with. In short, put yourself out there and make the initiative to meet and talk with other Algerians. It will be super easy to make friends if you have a proactive mindset. - Aug 2021

Yes! Of all our posts, this is the easiest time we've had making local friends. Algerians are friendly, curious, smart, hospitable, and surprisingly open considering the violence that occurred here in the 1990s and for how not open the country as a whole is. - Apr 2021

Algerians are very helpful and generous however this is a very closed country and I feel there is limited social mingling with foreigners. - Oct 2020

Language barriers unless you are a French or Arabic speaker. - Oct 2020

I think Algerians are awesome people. Funny, warm, open, generous, hospitable...as frustrating as it can be to work here, I think most Algerians are an absolute joy to hang out with. But not everyone feels that way...there are some large cultural differences, and language barriers can pose a problem. - Sep 2019
