Bamako - Post Report Question and Answers

Are preschools available? Day care? Are these expensive? What has been your experience with them, if any? Do the schools provide before- and/or after-school care?

AISB has a three-year-old class, and there are probably 4-5 high quality French preschools that are pretty easy to get into. Most people send their kids to school at about 2 1/2 and keep a nanny for the afternoons (schools are a half-day until kindergarten). - Jul 2011

House help is another blessing in this country! Most of the families with little children have happy and responsable nannies. If you want preschool, there're too. - Jul 2011

I'm not sure. I think nannies can easily be hired. I'm not aware of daycare programs (in English), although they must exist for Francophone children. - Oct 2010

There's french daycare available. I've know people that have put their kids in daycare.there's also full time nanny's which are not expensive. - May 2010

AISB has pre-K (3-4) which is half day for 3 year olds (until 1130) and a bit more than half day for 4 year olds (1230).There are also several good creshes around town. Everyone with children also have nannies. - Sep 2009

Many French daycares in Bamako. There's also a daycare at the International School. Local daycare not very expensive and good opportunity for child to learn french. - Apr 2009

Fabulous! Nannies and housekeepers are everywhere. A full time nanny is about US$200 a month (plus some bonuses and misc expenses). A housekeeper part time would be less than that, of course. - Feb 2009

Most people had nannies. - Feb 2009

Nannies are plentiful. There are several French creches but be careful to check them out as many of them are entirely run by Malians who may have different standards of care. - Jan 2009
