Yaounde - Post Report Question and Answers

Can you save money?

Definitely unless you spend it all on food. The differential is 20% and the COLA in the 40% range. - Apr 2014

Yes! Nothing to spend it on except occasional trips to Kribi. - Jan 2014

NO! - May 2012

Yes, but the trade-off is that it's boring here. - Sep 2011

Good grief, not unless you are just extremely disciplined in your finances. - Mar 2010

Absolutely not. You will have a much better time if you resolve yourself not to convert prices from CFA to dollars. A CAMEROONIAN buffet of local food is 12$ per person, outragerous by African standards. Buying a small pack of baby wipes for 10$ can be quite disheartening. A small bottle of water in a nightclub is 12$. Beer and domestic help are basically the only thing cheap here. The only way to save money would be to never travel and to eat nothing but manioc and greens floating in palm oil, as the poor Cameroonians do. The only people who save money are the expats working on huge salaries for mining companies. - Jan 2010

Yes, definitely. - Nov 2008
