Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?
Local buses and taxis are absolutely prohibited by expat employers for foreign staff and trains do not exist. There are two transportation companies USG folks are allowed to use: TransConnect and Black Swan. They are contacted via WhatsApp and are generally reliable for pickup and drop-off. TransConnect costs less, but late hour requests incur a surcharge. - Aug 2025
No. Lots of robberies on the buses and women are often hassled. Taxis not recommended, unless you find a driver you can trust. - May 2019
Absolutely not. There is no public transportation. Privately owned PMVs are off limits, as are taxis. I think there are one or two approved car services. - Jun 2016
The Red Dot cabs from the airport that you hire inside the airport are safe and cheap (US$10). Some expat aid-workers and volunteers take local buses and they are cheap, but not considered safe if you have anything of value on you or are a female traveling alone. - Jun 2008
