Are credit cards widely accepted and safe to use locally? Are ATMs common and do you recommend using them? Are they safe to use?

Major credit cards are accepted in many but not all places; local bank ATM cards are very convenient and give cash back. International ATM cards work fine, but it is good to have some funds in the local bank in case the international system is down. - Jun 2008
