Tijuana - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there problems with ethnic, race/racial minorities or religious prejudices? Gender equality?

Gender equality, as in many places remains a constant issue. See above response regarding racial issues. - Apr 2023

Not really. - Nov 2017

Generally no. Mexican culture can be patriarchal at times. - Mar 2015

Not that I am aware of. - Apr 2014

Tijuana still holds many chauvinistic attitudes, but rarely will there be any outright harassment. Racism exists, the lighter skinned tend to be more dominant in the city. Darker-skinned people don't seem to be treated as well as lighter-skinned people, but it is subtle. - Mar 2011

Yes, as with many Latin American countries, darker skinned people tend to be treated differently. - Dec 2010

Not that I am aware of. Men will definitely look at the women, but it does not seem to enter the workplace. - Aug 2010

I haven't encountered any prejudice of these sorts; the Mexicans I've encountered seem rather friendly and tolerant. - Mar 2008
