Sofia - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there personal security concerns to be aware of at this post? Please describe.

Not really. Sofia is generally a safe city. I feel safer here than at home, however I think it's important to remember that you are in a large city and to be aware of your surroundings. - Jun 2023

Like any large city petty crimes like pick-pockets and shoplifting are abundant. Just keep an eye out for your belongings. - Mar 2019

Pickpockets, general good security awareness needed. - May 2016

No. - Dec 2014

Like any other major city. - Nov 2014

ATMs. Bulgaria is one of the major countries in counterfeiting! - Aug 2014

The city is generally safe. In general much safer than cities of its size in the U.S. or Western Europe. There is an organized crime presence but they don't target people who don't mess with them. The organized crime figures tend to drive expensive European cars, have bodyguards, and drive like they own the roads. - Jun 2011

The biggest for me is the traffic and how fast people drive. It's a little tricky to walk around as a pedestrian and watch out for crazy drivers. The roads are bad, lots of potholes. - Oct 2009

The area in and around the Central Railway Station has some pickpockets. There is organized crime although they do not target people outside their circle. Otherwise it's much safer than any major U.S. city. - Feb 2008
