The cost of living is about 50% lower than in Western Europe and about 30% cheaper than East Coast U.S. cities. Rent, utility bills, and helpers are significantly cheaper than in the U.S. That being said, the cost of living has increased drastically since accession to the EU in 2007 and will likely continue to increase, and more so when Bulgaria joins the Euro zone in 2015 or so. It's sometimes hard to imagine how people make ends meet with 300 euros a month. - Jun 2011

Absolutely. Sofia and Bulgaria in general is very reasonable in comparison with Western Europe. Prices have increased in the past year and the U.S. Dollar will buy you less these days. - Feb 2008
