Tegucigalpa - Post Report Question and Answers

What are some interesting/fun things to do in the area? Can you recommend any “hidden gems"?

It's not hidden, but Tela is a great trip. El Salvador has wonderful beaches as well. The Ruinas in Copan are also worth the drive, just research before going...if the roads have construction, then try for another time. It can make the drive exhausting. - Mar 2024

Recommend staying at an A-Frame AirBnB in Zambrano. We spent the day doing in Comayagua doing a labyrinth trail, eating good food, and then going back to the A-Frame for a night of karaoke (they had a machine) and making smores (we had our own personal fire pit equipped with enough wood to last for 12 hours) - Jan 2024

Visit Valle de Angeles, but don't buy your souvenirs at the Banana Souvenir shop or on the main drag. Instead, go a couple of blocks east to the Tienda de Art Pabellon which is a HUGE souvenir "warehouse". The $50 shawls from the Banana shop are $30 at the Tienda de Art. Visit Finca El Cisne near Copán Ruinas (about a 75 minute drive from Copán down a very rough road...bring 4-wheel drive). The owner, Carlos Casteljón, loves to offer tours. I'm not sure but it may have cost about $150-$200 for 6 of us, including lunch. He took us horseback riding through the mountains, showed us his coffee processing facilities, cacao farming, vanilla farming, etc and then feeds you an amazing meal on the patio of his family home. He does not have helmets for children or special equipment for inexperienced riders. Frankly, he just plopped our 9 year old on the horse and let him learn how to ride by shouting instructions while our son half-listened. Carlos was right, though...experience is the best teacher. If that's going to make you uncomfortable, then this is not the tour for you. We spent about 6 hours on his finca and it was truly the highlight of our time in Honduras. Reservations are required, I would give at least 3-4 weeks notice. - Aug 2023

Part of the key to enjoying Tegucigalpa is to find fun activities you look forward to doing on a weekly basis (i.e. swimming, horseback riding, racketball, walking, get-togethers, kid's play dates, doggy fun days, etc.). For birdwatchers, there are great options here. For short day trips, there is a park overlooking the city called Picacho (which has a small zoo), hiking in La Tigra cloud forest, and then visiting small quaint towns such as Valle de Angeles, Santa Lucia, and Ojojona. - Oct 2019

Copan ruinas, roatan, Lago Yojoa, Pico Bonito. - Jul 2018

I've mentioned a lot of things elsewhere in this report, but for Tegucigalpa you have to mention La Tigra, Ojojona, Santa Lucia, Valle de Angeles, in addition to all the museums, parks, and theaters cited above. Radio El Progreso is a wild radio station. Most of its programming is bachata, reggaeton, and ranchera music. But it is run by Jesuits, so this lowbrow music is peppered with incisive political commentary and investigative reporting, all with a progressive Catholic tinge. In the span of five minutes you can hear Daddy Yankee rapping about a woman's butt, a reminder that Christ came to free the world from injustice, and then a criticism of the corruption prevalent in the National Party. - May 2018

There is nothing to do in Tegucigalpa except go to mediocre restaurants, walk around the mall, go to the movies, do something in your own home with friends, or exercise. To do anything worthwhile, you HAVE to leave the city. - May 2018

Nothing really. There is a cloud forest nature reserve about 50 minutes from Tegucigalpa but seeing it once is enough. The little villages of Valle de Angeles and Santa Lucia are ok for a couple Saturday excursions and the chance to walk a bit, but not really exciting. - Apr 2018

Valle de Angeles. - Jun 2016

- Lago Yajoa, Yuscaran, Tigres, San Jacito, Amapala. - Feb 2016

Travel to Roatan, El Salvador, Copan ruins. - Aug 2015

In Tegus there are not really any 'hidden gems' that I've noticed. Roatan, Tela, and La Ceiba are known for tourism. The one '"hidden gem" that I can think of might be the island of Amapala, although even the best hotel there is subpar. - Jul 2015

Valle de Angeles and Santa Lucia are quaint little tourist towns. Other than that, not many things to do if you're not an outdoorsy/hiking type of person. - Dec 2014

Valley of the Angels and Santa Lucia. - Oct 2014

Roatan, Valle de Angeles, delicious restaurants (la ghitonna, ginos, torre de pizza, gelatin show). - Aug 2014

Copan, Roatan. - Jun 2014

Tourism to the North coast (Roatan, Tela, etc.). Trips to Copan or Antigua. - Mar 2014

There is not much to do in the city but there are a few good restaurants (e.g., Honduran Restaurant "El Patio" and one good Lebanese Restaurant in a small shopping center called Los Castanos) and lots of fast food. If you are looking for more entertainment, you need to leave the city and head to places like Valle de Angeles, a small traditional town. - Jan 2014

See a previous question. - Oct 2013

Beaches and resorts on either coast. Valle de Angeles is a small town with resutarants where it's safe to walk around. - Jun 2013

In Teguc, nothing. There are a couple of nice mountain towns 15-45 mins away that are nice to visit, especially Valle de Los Angeles. - Jun 2013

Beaches and ruins. - Apr 2013

The carib beaches. The Pacific beaches. Copan. Soto Cano. El Salvador. In town there are lots of restaurants and a mall and theater for the kids. - Nov 2009

Travel. It is a 3-hour trip to El Salvador, which is the closest beach; 6 hours to the North Coast beaches, which are a bit nicer; Nicaragua, Copan ruins, and everyone goes at least once to Roatan (the beach island off the coast of Honduras). Also, there are a decent amount of good restaurants and a couple of movie theaters that play english movies. - Oct 2009
