Do you have any recommendations regarding mobile phones? Did you keep your home-country plan or use a local provider?

We use Claro and are happy. Many others use Tigo and are equally as happy. Claro does NOT work in the US. It worked for us in El Salvador and Nicaragua, but not in the US, Europe, or Africa. There is also no option to add a global plan. - Aug 2023

My work paid for one monthly plan, and I had a personal SIM that I paid as I went. I used a junky, dual-SIM phone instead of lugging around an expensive iPhone that would distract me during meetings and be a target for theft. - May 2018


Spend money on an unlocked phone so all you need is a sim card. I kept my US-plan and sim card for frequent trips back to the US for work, and I use Tigo in-country. My husband froze his AT&T account for $0.01/month. - May 2018


Unlocked iPhone. Tigo comes to the embassy once every couple weeks and will set you up with 10gb/month for $25 or so. The Tigo plans will not work elsewhere in Central America. - Apr 2018
