Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?
Public transportation is not approved. However, there are a few approved taxi style services that are reliable. Uber is also allowed but I find them to be cheaper AND less reliable, so spending the extra money on another approved service has saved us many nearly missed flights after unexpectedly cancelled Ubers. There is a great shuttle service provided and it is about $1.50. We used this in the beginning before our car arrived, to get back and forth to work, and occasionally use it when our schedules differ. It’s a great option that many people use daily. - Mar 2024

No. All public transportation, including cabs, are off-limits to embassy community. Most have ties to the gangs, and you are likely to get robbed. There is a cab service the embassy has vetted, and you can text the owner to schedule a ride. Riding with him is affordable, a ride to the airport is about $10. - May 2018
I think one would have to be crazy to get on a bus or use a taxi off the street. Everyone uses the same car service. Usually $5 to go most places in the city, $10 to go to the airport. - Apr 2018

No. You can use a vetted taxi, but no other form of public transportation in the city. Lots of violence and robberies on public buses, and white taxes are unsafe. - Aug 2015
Vetted taxis are essential. Sometimes I use a private company in a pinch or when I have to go a long distance and don't feel like paying the inflated prices of vetted taxis. Public transportation and white taxis are to be avoided for safety reasons. - Jul 2015
Nope, not unless you are looking to get mugged or worse. There have been many reports of people getting into taxis that have subsequently been driven from ATM to ATM and forced to withdraw all their money until they have no more in the account. There are shootings on public buses. We take vetted taxis. - Dec 2014
