Bujumbura - Post Report Question and Answers

Do you have any recommendations regarding mobile phones? Did you keep your home-country plan or use a local provider?

Lumitel and Econet are low-cost local providers. - Aug 2023

I use T-Mobile but I am technologically lazy and have no idea if there is a better/cheaper way to do it. I really don't care to change it out. - Mar 2021

Go local. Lumitel is the most popular and cheapest. All services are generally pre-paid. Lumitel provides unlimited 4G LTE service for 5.000 BF per month, plus a per minute charge for calls and a per SMS fee. EconetLEO offers 4G LTE service, as well. SMART provides 3G service. I'm not familiar with pricing. There is only one roaming partner in Burundi for U.S. carriers and the pricing is exorbitant. I would not recommend using your home-country plan. - Nov 2017

Bring an unlocked phone or buy something cheap on the local economy. Minutes are cheap here. - Aug 2015

Must have. - Aug 2009

They are available here and lots of people have them. Service is terrible though. - Oct 2008
