Hermosillo - Post Report Question and Answers

What is the availability of international schools? What has been your general experience with them, if any?

There is no true international school, no American school, and no school catered to English speakers. There are a number of private, bilingual or full Spanish schools to choose from. If you have older children who don't already speak Spanish then they would have a very hard time. There are bilingual schools but they are designed for students with Spanish as their first language, not English. All that being said, my kids really enjoy their school and are thriving. My daughter started in 1st grade with extremely limited Spanish but she has been able to learn very quickly and find her way at school. The support for language learners varies by school. I don't know that the education is super academically rigorous but my kids love their school and teacher and happily go each day. Some schools that consulate kids currently attend or have attended in the past include Campgrande, CDI, IMARC, Bambu Montessori, Irish Institute. - Jun 2023

This is the biggest weakness of this post. If your kids are in middle school or high school and don't speak fluent Spanish, there is not an option for them. If they do speak fluent Spanish, there isn't a great option for them but they can survive. Elementary school quality varies as well. My kids are at the Montessori school. Honestly, I'm not enamored with the teaching style or their progress in picking up the language, but they enjoy it, are making good friends, and they are slowly progressing in Spanish. There seems to be birthday parties every other week, which is great for them (though they are limited to 2-3 venues, so it feels repetitive). Parents of the kids seem to be friendly and welcoming to my spouse as well, who generally attends the school events without me while I'm at work. - Sep 2022

A variety of schools are available and there is no one preferred school kids attend. There are all-boys and all-girls schools and a Montessori pre-school to elementary school. All teach English but usually have Spanish as the primary language of instruction. Contact the CLO for current information. - Aug 2022

There are no international schools here. We have folks with elementary-aged kids, but they need to be comfortable in Spanish (or willing to learn, which they will do in one year). - Aug 2015

I know that there have been mixed reviews on schools here for older kids. We have preschool-aged children and have been delighted with the options here. - Apr 2013

There are no schools that are meet U.S. standards in Hermosillo and none are of the caliber those used to international schools would expect. Parents often complain of poor communication with teachers and school administration and students who are not native Spanish speakers have had a hard time adjusting, despite regular after school Spanish tutoring. While these issues are frustrating for those of us with preschool and primary school aged children, those with children in middle and high school should think very carefully about moving to this city. - Dec 2009

There are no international schools but many high-quality, private bilingual schools. I have a daughter who is school age and the school has a very solid english language program to complement the more basic mathematics, social studies, etc. - Feb 2008
