Colombo - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any unusual problems with insects or other infestations in housing?

Insects, particularly ants, mosquitoes and cockroaches, do tend to find their way indoors sometimes. Of these, be particularly careful around mosquitoes, which can carry the Dengue virus. Several people I know, including my wife, contracted Dengue here at post. It is very serious and can kill you. Be vigilant about mosquitoes. - Mar 2021

There are always lots of outside pests in our older home, from ants and roaches to chipmunks to lizards and snakes. I haven't had a snake in the house, but I know others who have. Geckos are very common. The newer housing doesn't seem to have those problems. - Sep 2020

I can't speak to the houses, but my high-rise apartment is mostly bug free. - Apr 2020

We have ants... all the time. Everywhere. Geckos are all around but they eat mosquitos so we let them live ;) - Sep 2017

Expect your ants, cockroaches and flying bugs to visit you frequently while living in Colombo, but all of these can be managed with your personal cleanliness in the kitchen and bathrooms. Mosquitoes can be a problem so make sure your doors and windows (or get screes) are closed during dawn and dusk. There is no malaria but there is dengue fever - our whole family had it at one time or another! - Mar 2017
