Accra - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

Yes. We used to have the vet do house visits, but he is very busy. Now we just go to his office on the military base and see his staff. Overall we are very pleased. Our dog got very sick and a couple of families had their dogs die. The vet suspects our dog was getting poisoned from the frogs on our yard. We stopped letting him go out unsupervised at night. Others suspect the bats as possible risks to dogs. - Sep 2023

There is one vet who's name/number is passed around the embassy. He does house calls and is very nice. Ghana does not have a quarantine requirement for pets. Pet food is available locally. - Nov 2022

One vet, extremely cheap, seems very competent. No quarantine, but make sure to have proper documentation to import. It's harder to get pets back to the US than to get them here, due to CDC rules right now. - Sep 2022

There is one vet that most Embassy families use and he makes house calls. There aren't many options for boarding your pet while on vacation. There is a ton of paperwork and blood work required to bring your dog into Ghana so plan ahead. Ghanaians do not like dogs very much and most of the household help and guards will be afraid of them. - Mar 2022

One really good vet at the nearby military hospital who does house calls and is inexpensive. No quarantine, we brought a cat. There are some strays running around but not many. Our cat did pick up some sort of infection that just got worse until we had to put her down. - Nov 2019

The embassy provided us the names of a couple of veterinarians, but we haven't had to use one yet. Lots of embassy folks have pets (cats, dogs, rabbits). Bringing our pet in was relatively easy - GSO had a sheet of exactly what needed to be done. There was no quarantine. - Apr 2018

This is not really a pet-friendly country. There are a few stray dogs walking around. - Aug 2017

Don't know, but very much doubt it. Ghanaians are generally terrified of dogs and will happily beat them. Animals have no rights in Ghana. - Apr 2017

Pet care is getting better. We use The Vet Place and are happy with the car our animals receive. No quarantine. - May 2014

No, but getting them here is still stressful. Easy import requirements. - Apr 2012
