Accra - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?

It is a rare occasion to find a charging station in the Accra area as they are not a popular vehicle. Having a home charger would make do but do not expect to drive a long distance and be able to charge your vehicle. Bring a gas or diesel vehicle, preferably an SAV or SUV because the roads can get a little rough when you go on the local dirt roads. Motorbikes seems to be a magnet to peoples vehicles since they break the laws on the regular with their methods of making a third lane or being impatient. Do not bring a vehicle you don’t mind getting messed up. - Jul 2025

I bought a Kia Sorento from a diplomate, and my husband brought the Jeep. Higher cars are necessary as the roads do have issues with potholes and large speedbumps. - Jun 2025

One that can handle big potholes and careless drivers. I would never bring a new car, it will definitely get scratched. If it can handle off-roading, even better - you'll find unpaved roads even within city limits. When it rains, the city will flood and roads will be impassable. Nothing too wide, either - you have to share the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, and hawkers who don't have sidewalks to use. - Aug 2024

Something that can (and likely will) get a little banged up. High clearance is a nice to have, but not a necessity. - Sep 2023
