San Salvador - Post Report Question and Answers

Is it easy to make friends with locals here? Are there any prejudices or any ethnic groups who might feel uncomfortable here?

As a white person, I feel pretty unqualified to talk about ethnic groups feeling uncomfortable. As for local friends, I think you can if you want to. - Sep 2025

Many, many Salvadorans have some connection to or have lived in the U.S., so in that sense there's not much of a barrier to overcome, as long as you speak Spanish. - Oct 2023

I’ve found it easier to make friends with Salvadorans than in any other country I’ve served. Maybe this has something to do with Salvadorans’ strong connections to the U.S. - so many Salvadorans have lived/studied in the U.S. themselves, or have family there. I think it’s relatively easy to make local friends. I haven’t noticed any prejudices, but again we’re pretty sheltered to the pandemic, so I may just not have been out enough. - Feb 2022

Yes, it is fairly easy to make friends with locals. I'm not sure about LGBT or other ethnic groups. - Aug 2021
