Berlin - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any particular health concerns? What is the quality of available medical care? What medical conditions typically require medical evacuation?

Medical care here is...okay. By and large German medicine is very "non-interventionist" and you'll have a hard time getting, say, prescription medications started by a German doctor. Likewise, getting an X-Ray can require some real effort, as German medicine is VERY radiation-phobic. Going to urgent care can involve long (3-6 hour) waiting times and can be a challenge to navigate without German. That said, the med unit at the Embassy is top-notch. Lean on them for help (and get with them early) and you and your family will be a-okay. - Aug 2023

Medical care here is surprisingly not that great. It's fine, but for anything major you'd be better off in the U.S. for both quality of care and bedside manner. - May 2018

Some of the best doctors I've ever had are here in Berlin, from specialists to generalists. And costs are cheap comparatively to the U.S. for routine appointments. You will find, however, that prescriptions here will differ than from U.S. so if you have something you're taking routinely, you may not find it here.

Also, doctors here tend to be more holistic than prescription-oriented. If you're neck is in so much pain you can barely move or function expect physical therapy to be prescribed and not painkillers. - Jan 2018

People don't vaccinate their children. If you have kids, make sure they get their vaccinations on time. - Jul 2015

Medical care is good. No glaring medical concerns. - Aug 2013

Excellent medical care. - Dec 2011
