Do you have any recommendations regarding mobile phones? Did you keep your home-country plan or use a local provider?

I kept my American number and Google Fi service for the entirety of my time here and no issues. My only German number was my Embassy-issued phone. My partner bought a Lidl (grocery store) German SIM upon arrival, stuck it in a candy bar phone, and tops it up through an app. - Aug 2023


We piggyback on the embassy's plan and it's a good deal. I think the newer plans even include free unlimited calls to the US. - May 2018

We use an embassy-provided cell phone. If you want a residence phone, we'd suggest Obi Phone to dial back to the U.S. for free using Google Voice/Hangout. - Jan 2018


Bring your own unlocked smartphone and buy a pay as you go data plan/sim card. Easier to reload your phone than get locked into a contract. - Jul 2015
