Johannesburg - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

While there is no quarantine, the entry process for animals is challenging to overcome. Best to use a professional pet shipper from South Africa, such as Global Paws. - Aug 2023

Quality vets are widely available here, as are pet supplies. The only real obstacle is getting your pet to post, which includes a long, expensive quarantine period. Obviously you’ll want to use caution when walking a dog out in public, and stick to safer areas like closed-off parks. - Aug 2022

We brought an 8-year-old Golden Retriever with us. Getting her in required help from Mooikloof Kennels, and they were fantastic. There was lots of prior work to do (including a blood test for a disease that only a few labs in the world can test for) - so start early, and plan. Vets here have been excellent but expensive. Likewise pet food, there are really cheap options available, but since we love our pet, we go with healthy options for a premium. Kennels are also widely available and excellent - look for one that is also a stable, they tend to have oodles of space. - Jun 2022

Great vets and kennels for dogs. - Oct 2019

We don't have a pet, but vets seems to be quite good. There are no quarantine requirements, but South Africa requires animals to be flown in as cargo, which can be a hassle - and costly. - Apr 2017

Lots of vets. - Sep 2016

depends on where they come from. My dog came from the U.S. and there wasn't an issue with quarantine. I recommend a pet shipping co. to handle this portion as it can get complicated. - Aug 2011

Depends on where they come from. My dog didn't have to be quarantined but I relied on a pet shipping co. to get everything in order b/c the whole process is complicated. - Jul 2010

Nope. - Oct 2009
