Tallinn - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of car do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car do you advise not to bring?

Nothing special -- small SUVs abound, but normal sedans or wagons fine too. - Sep 2016

Front-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. With snow tires, the winters are no problem. Parts and accessories are easily available. I personally think it is better to buy a car here than ship one, due to EU regulations. - Jan 2013

A four-wheel-drive vehicle is a good idea for the winter and out of town trips. Snow or studded tires are mandatory in the winter. Toyota and Honda have dealerships here and we get our car serviced there without difficulty. I haven't heard of any carjackings. - Oct 2012

A 4-wheel drive vehicle is best for icy and snowy winters, but people have managed with minivans and smaller cars as long as they have studded tires. - Oct 2012

Whatever you drive, be sure to have all-weather or winter tires as well as a good spare. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with carjackings. There is a lot of slush and snow piled up on the side of the road during the winter. - Sep 2010

Any kind, but not needed if living in the center of town. - Aug 2009
