Bucharest - Post Report Question and Answers

What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

Some spouses work remotely, but with a 7 hour time difference to East Coast time zone, working remotely can be a challenge. There are jobs at the embassy as well as the American school. Availability will vary with arrival timing. I haven't heard of anyone getting a job on the local economy. - Jun 2023

Working remotely is definitely an option, and it's so easy with the excellent internet. There are jobs at the embassy as well as the American school. I know one person who is employed at a local private school, and she teaches in English. - Mar 2019

Tough call. Maybe? I suppose I could have gotten a job as a nurse within a private clinic, but I didn't ever look into it. I know plenty of women (spouses) who spent more time volunteering than working, but I also know there's interest in freelance work within the expat community. Things like teaching yoga and pilates, being a professional organizer, photographer... the typical expat spouse thing. - Feb 2014

Not sure. I found a job with no problems, but others struggle. - Aug 2012

There are some jobs at the international school, plus tutoring or teaching opportunities. - Jul 2010

No, not for the non-working spouse. There are sub jobs at AISB and some jobs at the embassy only. - Dec 2009

No. It's hard to navigate getting a work permit and you'd need to know a lot of Romanian to get by. - Dec 2008

If you are European. With EU membership there are good opportunities for Europeans. For Americans it is pretty limited. EFM jobs at the Embassy are rare. - Feb 2008

I don't know for certain but since pay in Romania is considerably less than in the U.S., I wouldn't think so. - Jan 2008
