Chiang Mai - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of car do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car do you advise not to bring?

An SUV would be good if you intend to do driving trips around Northern Thailand as the mountain roads can be a bit treacherous. If you're driving around the city, a smaller sedan might be more convenient. Thailand is a left-hand drive country, so it may be more convenient to purchase a car in country with a right-hand steering wheel. Cars can be expensive here, but there seem to be a decent number of used cars for sale. Chiang Mai is quite safe and I've never heard of anyone's car being broken into. - Mar 2019
