Lilongwe - Post Report Question and Answers

What is the air quality like at post (good/moderate/bad)? Are there seasonal air quality issues? Does the air quality have an impact on health?

Air quality is fine. Burning of trash happens periodically but other than that air quality is fine. Seasonal allergies affect alot of people. Mainly the trees that bloom affect people certain times of the year. - Jul 2020

Overall it's pretty good. We moved here from Shanghai so that is our comparison. My child kept breathing in deeply our first few months telling me that Malawi air was wonderful. In the dry season it can be dusty; dust gets all over everywhere in the house. Then there are those that burn trash and yard rubbish. - Feb 2020

I think the air is fine. Dusty in the dry season but otherwise fine. Lilongwe doesn't suffer the same pollution issues that other sub-Saharan capitals do...at least, not yet. - Sep 2018

Overall, the air quality is excellent here. There is one time of year where people like to burn grasses, etc, so the air deteriorates then. It's fairly minimal though. The air quality is a big plus here. I've been sick way less here than at our other more-polluted posts. - Jul 2017

As someone with allergies and asthma - I love this place! Yes, you will still have some allergies and burning season is a little rough, but overall the air is great. - Oct 2016

Excellent - Aug 2015

Perfect...except in the burning season...which can last a while. - Sep 2013

The air quality is pretty good except that people are always burning something or another, and that can really bother me. There is always some flowering tree in bloom, which, while very pretty, means allergies are often an issue. - Sep 2012
