What are some typical ways to socialize, either with local people or with other expatriates? Are there groups or clubs that you can recommend?
Milan International Parents group, Girls in Milan (both on Facebook), and the Benvenuto Club for Women. There are few Americans at post and people tend to be really busy with travel and visitors (everyone will want to come see you), so it takes a bit more effort to be social here. - Jun 2018
Having a coffee (espresso), going to aperitivo or dinners. There is the Benvenuto Club (like an international women's club), and a facebook group 'Young professional women of Milan'. I'm quite sure there are others too, but I haven't felt the need to join one. - Sep 2016
Strong. Italians like to entertain, although more away from the home than in. The aperitivo culture is strong in Milan. Basically, bars around 6:00 pm will start luring customers in by offering free food. Some places it is meager, but others offer quite a spread of finger foods. You can make a meal out of it. Buy a drink if you eat - it is brutta figura (bad form/rude) if you don't. - Aug 2013

Pretty good. There are a fair number of clubs for dancing or live music. La Scala is world famous for opera and dance. Like most of Europe, the Arts are generally well supported, though it does take a bit of effort to find out what's going on. - Dec 2008
