Quito - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any particular mental health issues that tend to crop up at post, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter blues)?

The weather doesn't change much year-round. Sunrise 6am and sunset 6pm, it rains at more times than others, temperature ranges from mid 40s to low 70s. Humidity in households tends to vary. - May 2025

Not sure. There’s a dry season and a wet season. Even during the wet season, the sun comes out. Since we’re at the equator, the sun goes down at the time time everyday. - May 2025

You will have 12 hours of daylight 365 days a year. - Apr 2025

The sun rises and sets at the same time throughout the year as we're on the equator: 6:30 am/6:30 pm. I miss having longer days, to be honest. You kind of lose track of what month it is. - Jul 2023

There are long periods of gray days that seemed to sort of get people down. Then when the sun popped out again we all felt better. One big thing is that people get cold. None of the housing has heating but the temperatures can get low. That led to some grumpy feelings. - Jul 2023

Nothing in particular. - Jul 2019

No, it's sunny most days! Brief rainy season but even then you typically see the sun in the morning and rain comes through in the afternoon. - Jul 2018

With the amazing climate SAD shouldn't be an issue. I think the language barriers which can prevent establishing solid friendships might be the only major issue. - Sep 2016
