Cape Town - Post Report Question and Answers

Is this a "shopping post"? Are there interesting handicrafts, artwork, antiques, or other items that people typically buy there?

Yes. Local artwork, carvings, clothing. - Aug 2021

Cape Town is rapidly becoming known for its design - skip the "craft markets" with junk imported from other neighboring countries and seek out some of the really interesting modern textiles, woodwork, etc., that is being created today. - Feb 2018

The biggest thing people shop for here is local wine. Some people ship massive amounts of Cape Town wine back home when they leave post. - Oct 2017

Cape Town is not much a of a "craft" kind of place. There are plenty of local artists and furniture makers working within their own vision, but there isn't a local style of beadwork or something that you need to pick up to show you've been here. - May 2014

Wine, Wine and more Wine. For those who don't drink--lots of arts-and-crafts and knick-knacks. "Big Five" safari stuff--though that is not really 'Cape Town'. Very cool carved ostrich eggs from the ostrich farm. Anything and everything with Table Mountain on it. Local trips--whale-watching, seal-watching, bird-watching, flower-watching, fishing, hunting. - Aug 2013

Fair-trade crafts, local fashion designers, weekend getaways. - Oct 2007
