Bogota - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?

A normal SUV works great and the ground clearance can come in handy. Potholes can be a pain on some roads, but the biggest issue is plowing through street flooding during the rainy season... which can get pretty deep sometimes. Although most parking areas are secure garages, I still wouldn't recommend bringing something too flashy. Google the phrase "No Dar Papaya" to see what i'm referencing - Mar 2025

A not nice, not extra large SUV (something you don’t mind if it gets dinged up by erratic local drivers but that will fit in most parking spots or garages). You don’t want a car with hard to find parts. - May 2024

For Canadian diplomats a vehicle is not necessary unless you want one for weekend trips outside of the city (to fincas for example). Traffic is very heavy in Bogota and getting around by car often isn't worth the hassle inside the city. For trips outside the city, a car that can confidently handle pothole-riddled roads and the occasional dirt/off road experience would be best. Cars can be affordably rented on Localiza, for those who don't want to own their own. Getting around Bogota on motorcycle is also generally more comfortable and faster than a car, except when it's raining. - Aug 2023
